The Fly By

“In the blind, when the birds are circling you have a crucial decision to make… call the shot or give them a final pass and hope they commit.” That is what we call the fly by. Giving that chance to let them fly by one more time could be the difference between a single bird down or the whole group of six. The call is yours, is the fly by worth it?

I have a pair of redheads mounted at home that needed the fly by. The wind was strong that day and we don’t get many redheads in my neck of the woods. They flew across the outskirts of the spread, probably 40 yards, and I made the delicate decision to let them make one more pass. I knew that this could be good bye or a chip shot in the sweet spot. A little soft calling and they banked. The fly by worked and the redheads took their place on the wall. Sometimes the fly by can make all the difference!

At More Than A Calling we have our own version of the fly by. Each week we’ll share a short Christ-centered thought on how waterfowl hunting intersects with following Jesus. We hope you’ll take three minutes to read this encouraging word that we hope inspires, challenges, and helps you follow Jesus more closely. Paul says that we are all running a race.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
— 1 Corinthians 9:24

We desire to see men and women run their spiritual race hard and fast!

To win a race, you have to train. To have a good hunt, you have to put in the work of scouting and creating decoy spreads. To grow in your relationship with Christ, you have to be disciplined. We want to provide tools for you to grow spiritually.

Don’t pass shoot, stop sky-blasting— let ‘em fly by one more time so the shot is perfect.
